Rice weevil

(Sitophilus oryzae)

Biology:

The rice weevil, which also belongs to the true weevils family, is very similar to the grain weevil. It is approximately 3 mm long and, unlike the grain weevil, can fly. The wing covers of the brown-black weevil feature four unclear reddish flecks. This species is more thermophilic than the grain weevil. However, the development cycle and lifestyle are the same.

Damage:

The damage caused by the rice weevil is comparable to that caused by the grain weevil. It can be found predominantly in warmer countries and can even infest the grains in the fields there. Due to altered storage conditions with warmer temperatures, they are spreading here in Germany.
