(Lasius fuliginosus)
Biology:
The workers of this species, which belongs to the scale ants (Formicinae), are 4-6 mm long and have a deep black coloration, which is enhanced by a strong sheen (name). Their extensive cardboard nests are mainly found in hollow tree trunks, old fence posts and the like. However, they are also found in buildings in stonework, cracks in walls and preferably in wooden beams, which do not necessarily have to be damaged. Their often quite extensive colonies consist of several partial nests, all of which have several to many queens.
Damage:
The damage is similar to that of the lawn and path ant. In addition, if their nests are located in buildings and houses, these ants can be regarded as material pests, as they attack wooden parts (beams etc.). This can cause significant damage by destroying the fabric of the building.
