Fur moth

(Tinea pellionella)

Biology:

The fur moth (Fam. Tineidae, true moths) has a wingspan of approx. 17 mm, the head is shaggy-haired like the clothes moth. The fringed forewings are yellowish-brown with some dark spots. The larva lives in a self-spun, flattened larval quiver, which – unlike the clothes moth – is not attached to the ground, but is carried by the larva as it walks around. As the fur moth has a high moisture requirement, it is mainly found in maritime climates in damp and poorly heated homes. In modern, centrally heated homes, it has largely been replaced by the clothes moth.

Damage:

The damage to furs and wool textiles is comparable to that caused by clothes moths.
