Rice weevil

(Sitophilus oryzae)

Biology:

The rice weevil, which also belongs to the weevil family, is very similar to the grain weevil. It is approx. 3 mm long and, unlike the grain weevil, can fly. Four indistinct reddish spots can be seen on the elytra of the brown-black beetles. The species is somewhat more heat-loving than the grain weevil. However, its development and way of life are similar.

Damage:

The damage caused by the rice weevil is comparable to that of the grain weevil. It occurs mainly in warmer countries and can infest grains in the field. Due to changes in storage conditions with higher temperatures, it is also spreading in our country.
