Biological Control Agents in Action
Biological control agents are tiny insects that specifically parasitize or prey on pests. They are effective in situations where chemical pesticides are undesirable—they are safe, practical, and natural.
Examples of beneficial organisms:
- Grain Wasp (Lariophagus distinguendus)
Controls the larvae of grain beetles, rice weevils, bread beetles, and grain moths. - Flour Moth Parasitoid Wasp (Habrobracon hebetor)
Effective against flour moths, storage moths, and dried fruit moths. - Trichogramma evanescens
Parasitizes moth eggs—ideal for prevention. - Ant wasp (Cephalonomia tarsalis)
A specialist in controlling the larvae of the grain weevil. - Storage Pirate (Xylocoris flavipes)
Feeds on the eggs, larvae, and pupae of beetles and moths. - Laelius pedatus
Helps control moth eggs.
Benefits of Biological Control Agents
Modified atmosphere packaging (MAP) in special BigBags or treatment chambers are alternative solutions for professional food preservation.
Natural Earths Derived from Fossils
Silicid®, made from silica (diatomaceous earth), is a mineral-based product that acts purely through physical means to provide long-term control of stored-product pests.
It is used specifically for preventive and curative crop protection and is ideal for applications where the use of synthetic chemical active ingredients is to be avoided.
The product consists of finely ground, amorphous silica of natural origin.
Mechanism of Action
- Fine silicate particles destroy the insects' protective wax layer.
- Removes moisture → Dehydration and death of the pests.
- No chemical residues, no development of resistance.
Application
- For grain: approx. 1–2 kg per metric ton.
- For storage areas: approx. 10 g/m².
- Remains effective indefinitely when stored in a dry place.
